Mistreatment of Alki octopus raises concern

Protect octopi from hunters

As word spreads through the country on the octopus affair after the front-page articlein The Seattle Times, I find my self questioning this young man’s morals [“Octopus capture off Alki prompts call for preserve,” page one, Nov. 3]. What made him decide this was appropriate, especially when one could assume the octopus was protecting her young?

I understand that his licensewas all in order and he followed all the rules, but that doesn’t mean it was right thing to do, especially in such a public and popular place. As a West Seattleite, I have seen the cove in discussion and find myself agreeing with the dive instructorthat the beautiful underwater scenery, as well as the fantastic view of the city, should be closed off to all hunters.

Bob Bailey was right to go public and protect such famous creatures for themselves as well as for the divers across from all over who come to see these magnificent animals. The octopi and all other sea life in these areas need to be protected from hunters.
