Envisioning a bicycle-friendly Seattle

Pay for construction costs

In reference to the op-ed “Building a Seattle for bicyclists,” I totally understand the need for bicyclists, considering they are healthier for us and the environment [Opinion, Nov. 6]. What I have an issue with is their criticizing how much they are or aren't receiving out of the city's budget. Times are tough, people. There is hardly any money for necessities to keep the city running.

I would like to make bicyclists a deal. One, obey all road laws such as not weaving in and out of traffic to get to their destination quicker. Two, signal their intentions. Car drivers are not mind readers. Also, part of my deal would be if they want more roads just for cyclists, then contribute to the pie by having to purchase license tabs.

Yes, the initiation of this law would cost money, however in the long run it would make a healthy contribution to the exorbitant costs of construction. If owners of cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc. have to pay for use ofroads, why should cyclists be exempt?

— Diane Barrie, Poulsbo

If you want it, you pay for it

I just read the op-ed article by bikers Thomas Goldstein and John Healy, and heads-up, you are not better than the rest of us. If you want special construction for your bicycles then you should pay for it — and no more lying about how many cars are displaced; we’re not that stupid.

— Dan J. Del Duca, Seattle
