Seattle City Council looks to refine McGinn's Vulcan proposal

Require more from Vulcan
Seattle is not only right to perform due diligence but it ought to require more from Vulcan before a deal is made [“Council to McGinn: Not so fast on Vulcan proposal,” page one, Dec. 1].

One parcel given to the city worth under $10 million hardly pays for what Vulcan will be granted. In fact, if Vulcan suggests the city can build low-income housing on that donated parcel to accomplish a deal, Vulcan itself ought to build the units as part of its contribution for what it receives and then donate that wholly developed block to the city.

Use of the Seattle housing levy to build on donated land simply reduces the value of what Vulcan donates for its gain, which is beyond what we imagine. Further, such use of levy funds robs Peter Steinbrueck to pay Paul Allen, reducing use of this valuable voter-approved asset.

Vulcan will win big even if it must spend $100 million to build a block’s worth of affordable housing. Hold Vulcan’s feet to the fire and we all win.

Not a fair deal
I am glad to see some pushback on this scheme.

Aside from the impact on the South Lake Union area, what about the bogus “deal” that Paul Allen proposes in “giving” the city another block (valued at $12 million) in “exchange” for being permitted to do what he wants: according to The Times, he is being granted $12 million in credit for permitting and other costs. This is not a “gift” and is no deal at all.
