A sampling of A-list events around Seattle and Western Washington, May 26-30, 2011.
Folklife Festival: The Northwest Folklife Festival fills Seattle Center Friday through Monday. Donations are encouraged, but it's still free, if that's all you can afford. Details at www.nwfolklifefestival.org.
Children's Day: Memorial Day Monday is also Seattle Japanese Garden Children's Day, with a Japanese-language puppet show, origami lessons, traditional Japanese dances, and nature activities. Two children get in free with a paying adult. For details, search our online Weekend Calendar.
Seagull calling and more: Kitsap Harbor Festival in Bremerton and Port Orchard features a fun run, arts show, music, tall ships, a car show and the famous Seagull Calling Festival. Details at www.kitsapharborfestival.com.
Ski to Sea: Bellingham hosts its Memorial Day weekend blowout, the Ski to Sea race and festival. It's a 90-mile race involving skiing, running, biking and paddling from the snowy slopes of Mount Baker to the beach of Bellingham Bay. There's also a parade, block party and more. See www.skitosea.com.
Bike rides: Several choices for cyclists this weekend, including the 7 Hills of Kirkland bike ride (see www.7hillskirkland.org), with a choice of three scenic, hilly routes on Monday. Or families are invited to join the Kids Ride for Penguins, a five-mile ride through Point Defiance Park to focus attention on global warming and the problems it creates for wildlife such as penguins (see www.elementsofbicycling.com).
Celebrate beer: Brew pubs and breweries all over Seattle have been hosting special tastings and pairings and various other doings that boil down to excuses to drink beer during Seattle Beer Week. See seattlebeerweek.com.
Memorial Day: See our list of special Memorial Day Events in the online Weekend Calendar.
