New state travel planner launched

A new package of travel planning tools for touring the state of Washington launched last week, created by Destination Media Alliance, former publisher of the official state travel planner.

Called "Scenic Washington State," the new combination of print, digital and mobile planning tools debuts in the wake of last year's defunding of the state's tourism bureau, a victim of state budget cuts.

A glossy travel guide, being distributed at visitor information centers, transportation hubs and AAA offices throughout the Western United States and British Columbia, includes interactive features, allowing readers to scan photos with a smartphone or electronic tablet to access digital content.

The guide may also be ordered free online at, the home website. Travel counselors are available by phone: 800-544-1800.

Discover Pass now transferable

A single pass for use on Washington recreation lands can now be used on either of two vehicles, effective immediately, thanks to changes signed into law last week.

The change broadens use options for the Discover Pass, good for parking at Washington state parks as well as Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife sites and recreation sites managed by the state Department of Natural Resources. The change also affects vehicle passes issued free with the purchase of annual fishing and hunting licenses.

Previously, the annual Discover Pass, which costs $30, was good with only one vehicle, identified on the pass. Holders of previously issued passes may now enter a second vehicle license number on their existing pass.

The nontransferable nature of the original pass was deemed a deterrent to potential purchasers who own more than one vehicle.
