Seattle Reign FC’s slim chances of earning a spot in the inaugural National Women’s Soccer League postseason were crushed on Saturday with a 3-1 loss to the Chicago Red Stars at Benedictine University Sports Complex in Lisle, Ill.

Chicago (7-7-5) avenged a 4-1 loss in Seattle just a week ago, while the Reign (5-11-3) fell to the Red Stars for the first time in four meetings this season.

Chicago’s Sonja Fuss, a German national-team player, opened the scoring in the 11th minute, converting a penalty kick after Seattle’s Stephanie Cox was called for a foul in the box.

Kaylyn Kyle scored the equalizer with her third goal of the year— also on a penalty kick — in the 28th minute, but the Red Stars took the lead for good when Inka Grings, also a German international, scored 13 minutes later. Grings added to the lead with another goal in the 72nd minute.

With the loss, Seattle was officially eliminated from playoff contention. The team had needed four straight wins coupled with four straight losses from Western New York for a berth.
