Jimmy Kimmel: Nov. 17 is National UnFriend Day

Posted by Stephanie Clary

"Friendship is a sacred thing, and I believe Facebook is cheapening it," Jimmy Kimmel said Wednesday night on his late-night show.

The television host and comedian declared Nov. 17 National UnFriend Day with help from William Shatner (who is — apparently — not Kimmel's friend).

Kimmel wants Facebook users to take a good look at their online friends list and consider downsizing in two weeks.

"I encourage you to cut out some of the friend-fat in your life," Kimmel said to his audience. "A friend is someone you have a special relationship with. Not someone who asks 'which Harry Potter character are you?'"

Although delivered in the context of a comedy show, Kimmel's gripe is a recent addition to the social media backlash we looked at in October.
