Seahawks sign free-agent tight end Owens

Veteran tight end John Owens signed with the Seahawks on Thursday, giving Seattle a blocking specialist from Notre Dame to go along with their pass-catcher from that school.

Seattle Times staff reporter

Veteran tight end John Owens signed with the Seahawks on Thursday, giving Seattle a blocking specialist from Notre Dame to go along with their pass-catcher from that school.

Owens, a 29-year-old free agent, played the past two seasons in Detroit. He appeared in all 16 games last season and caught eight passes, but he is being brought to the team for his blocking skills. Seattle has a starting tight end in John Carlson, who led the team with 55 catches as a rookie last season.

Owens is the third player the Seahawks have signed in free agency this season, following defensive tackle Colin Cole and wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh. The Seahawks will host long snapper Bryan Pittman on a free-agent visit on Friday. Pittman is from Thomas Jefferson High School and attended Washington.
