Linebacker Leroy Hill suspended for Seahawks' season opener

Seahawks linebacker Leroy Hill was suspended by the NFL for the season opener for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Hill will also be fined an additional game check.

The suspension is not a surprise. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of drug possession in April in Georgia, where he was arrested during the 2009 offseason.

Hill's suspension begins Sept. 4; he won't be eligible to rejoin the team until after the Sept. 12 game against the San Francisco 49ers at Qwest Field.

Hill still faces an assault charge in Issaquah, which is currently proceeding toward trial. He had a court appearance last week, which was continued until Wednesday.

Note

• Safety Kevin Ellison pleaded not guilty to a felony charge of drug possession in Los Angeles Super Court on Wednesday. Ellison was arrested in May while a member of the San Diego Chargers. He was waived and subsequently joined the Seahawks. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 5.
