TEMPE, Ariz. — Embarrassed on Monday night, the Arizona Cardinals are left to try to pick up the pieces of a season that once seemed promising but is showing signs of a free fall.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt, who endured a six-game losing streak a year ago, is not one to panic and said so in his news conference a day after the Cardinals were manhandled by the San Francisco 49ers 24-3 in an NFC West game.

The nationally televised flop was Arizona's fourth loss in a row after a 4-0 start.

"My biggest sense is that I feel like I've let our fans down," Whisenhunt said. "We've let our fans down as a team, and that hurts."

Now comes a short week of practice and a trip to Green Bay to face the Packers on Sunday.

Whisenhunt said he will be looking to the team's leaders to help emphasize what needs to be done.

"We'll get on these guys more, and I think one of the things is we'll have the players get on the players," he said. "Peer pressure plays a part in that. You've got to get on your leaders to do that, but let's not get into a panic here and start changing things up."

Ex-coach emailed league

Mike Cerullo, former New Orleans Saints assistant coach, sent a Nov. 2, 2011, email to league spokesman Greg Aiello about the team's alleged bounty program that led to suspensions for some players and coaches.

The email, obtained by Pro Football Talk, is attached to a court filing from Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma, who has been suspended for the season.

Cerullo references Joe Vitt, then a New Orleans assistant coach, who is serving as Saints interim coach because coach Sean Payton is suspended for this season. Vitt is a former Seahawks assistant.

Cerullo wrote Aiello: "So I have info on Saints Joe Vitt Lying to your NFL Investigators on Bounties from 2010, along with proof!!! I was there, in the cover up meetings, with players and Joe, I love the NFL and want to work there again, but I am afraid if I tell thge (sic) truth I will never coach again in the NFL."

Cerullo is director of football operations at Princeton.

• Baltimore Ravens tackle Bryant McKinnie, 33, is facing a $375,000 lawsuit stemming from allegations he ran up a hefty tab at two Miami strip clubs.

According to the lawsuit filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, McKinnie owes the money to Charles "Pop" Young, father of rapper Trick Daddy. McKinnie denied the allegations to The Baltimore Sun.

"What strip club gives you a $375,000 tab? It just sounds stupid to me," McKinnie said.

• The Jacksonville Jaguars traded receiver Mike Thomas, 25, to the Detroit Lions for an undisclosed draft pick. Last year, Thomas signed a three-year contract extension worth $18 million; $9 million is guaranteed.

• Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel will start Thursday night's game at San Diego because Brady Quinn has not been cleared to practice after getting a concussion. Cassel regains the starting job — at least for one week — he lost after a dismal five-game stretch to start the season.

• Tampa Bay placed guard Carl Nicks, an All-Pro with New Orleans last season, on injured reserve. Nicks, 27, is having surgery on his left foot.
