Cornerback Richard Sherman will have an appeal hearing regarding his positive test for a banned substance on Friday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

There is no timetable for a ruling on that case, and while Schefter subsequently stated that if the test result is upheld, Sherman could be suspended immediately, the NFL generally imposes a suspension at the beginning of the week and not two days before a game.

There's no hard and fast rule on the timing of a suspension, but that is the general guideline.

Seattle's depth at cornerback remains a concern with Brandon Browner suspended through the remainder of the regular season because of a positive test result for a banned substance. Walter Thurmond and Marcus Trufant are not expected to practice Wednesday because of hamstring injuries, though Carroll said there's hope they might be available by Sunday, when the Seahawks host the San Francisco 49ers.

Rookie Jeremy Lane started at right cornerback Sunday in the victory over Buffalo and second-year cornerback Byron Maxwell also played extensively. Ron Parker got time in the second half.

"They're gaining confidence," Carroll said of the younger cornerbacks. "We're seeing reason to trust them more, and it's really crucial for us that that's happening right now."
