Seahawks TE Zach Miller returning from foot injury

Tight end Zach Miller will start working out with Seahawks next week after coming off the physically unable to perform list on Friday.

Seahawks tight end Zach Miller came off the physically unable to perform list Friday and will start working his way back next week.

Miller, Seattle’s projected starter, didn’t practice during training camp because of a foot injury. Miller’s absence allowed backup tight ends Sean McGrath and Luke Willson to split much of the time with the first team. The Seahawks took Willson in the fifth round this year. McGrath is in his second year.

Coach Pete Carroll recently said he hoped to have Miller back in time for the third exhibition game, but it’s unclear if Miller will be able to get back into playing shape that quickly.

Miller had 38 catches for 396 yards and three touchdowns a year ago.

“We’ll continue to be very measured in how we bring him back in,” Carroll said.

Carroll said the Seahawks still don’t have a timetable for receiver Percy Harvin’s return, but added the surgeon who performed the surgery on Harvin’s hip was “thrilled” with the way he bounced back.

“That’s a great sign they transferred to us,” Carroll said. “It’s going to take a good month to figure out if he’s even going to be able to have a chance to come roaring back out of it, but it looks like the signs are very good. We’ll see what that means, but we’re not putting any weeks on it. We don’t know.”

Harvin had surgery on his ailing hip earlier this month and is expected to be out three or four months.

Clemons getting closer

Injured defensive end Chris Clemons is nearing a return. Clemons has been working out individually to get back on the field after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament against Washington last year.

“He’s right in the middle of the rigorous rehab now,” Carroll said. “He’s on the field cutting and moving and doing defensive-line drills. I don’t know what that means time-wise, but he’s doing well. He’s managing his way through it, and he’s not in any pain or discomfort. It’s just a matter of getting his confidence back and getting him back to full speed.”

Clemons, Bruce Irvin and Cliff Avril — three players Seattle is counting on to improve its pass rush — have each missed significant portions or all of training camp because of injuries.

Carroll didn’t rule out Avril, who returned to practice this week, for Saturday’s exhibition game against the Broncos. Irvin isn’t expected to play after not practicing during the week.
