JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco’s normally tight-lipped quarterback, blasted Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman in an interview with the New York Post on Thursday.
Kaepernick called Sherman’s postgame interview with Erin Andrews after the NFC Championship Game “ridiculous.” He said he’s rooting for the Broncos and also said that he doesn’t regret throwing to wide receiver Michael Crabtree in the end zone. Sherman, of course, tipped that pass that led to the game-winning interception.
“I’ll take that matchup every day,” Kaepernick told The Post. “I feel like he’s afraid of our receivers, and that’s something I look forward to (exploiting) next year.”
After that final play, Sherman flashed a choke sign at Kaepernick. The NFL fined Sherman $7,875 for taunting. Sherman then called Crabtree a “sorry” receiver during a live interview on Fox with Andrews immediately following the game. He also called Crabtree mediocre in his postgame news conference.
“I think everyone knows his comments were ridiculous,” Kaepernick said. “As my dad has always told me, if you have to tell people how good you are, then how good are you, really? If you have to go on national TV and try to say you’re the best cornerback in the league, then you’ve got your own insecurities.”
Kaepernick’s comments came after the Seahawks’ media availability had ended, so Sherman was not available to respond.
Kaepernick was in New York to promote an energy drink, but he told Deadspin in a separate interview that he wouldn’t be staying to watch the Super Bowl. Kaepernick also told Deadspin that Sherman must have forgotten when Crabtree “went for a hundred on you when we played you guys up here.”
That comment prompted a response from Branton Sherman, Richard’s older brother and business manager. Branton Sherman tweeted to Kaepernick: “please name the game Crabtree went for over 100 yards on Richard Sherman??? I smell bulls***!!! Knock it off bro!!”
In four games against the Seahawks in the past two years, Crabtree hasn’t had more than 65 receiving yards, and he hasn’t caught a touchdown pass.
“Did that make you feel better about yourself?” Kaepernick told The Post. “Then go ahead, because I’m not worried about you. I’m just worried (about) winning games and helping us get to the Super Bowl.
“I can’t get insulted by something that ridiculous coming from somebody like that. From the time that play ended to the time his news conference ended, let’s just say it wasn’t very politically correct.”
