Nick Reed-y and willing

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Who helped himself in Saturday's exhibition game? Well, how about rookie defensive end Nick Reed? There can't be any doubt about that. He intercepted a pass, shared a sack and spent the better part of Saturday night making a case for why he should be the fifth defensive end on Seattle's regular-season roster.

In many ways, the competition between Reed and Baraka Atkins is fascinating. Both were second-day selections, but while Reed is an undersized overachiever, Atkins has the build of an NFL defensive end. He's also shown promise, and in 2007, Atkins' development was the reason the team felt it could trade Bryce Fisher to Tennessee for a draft pick. He had two sacks last season, but he's going to have to work to keep Reed from vaulting over him on the depth chart.

Reed has made plays at every step of training camp. After the first two workouts he showed he had the speed to get around bigger tackles. 'Well, let's see how he does when they put the pads on.' Well, the man still made plays with pads on. Then the question would be would he be able to do that in a game-situation. The answer Saturday night in San Diego was that, 'Yes, he could.'
