No. 185: Seahawks -- TE Anthony McCoy, USC

Posted by

Seattle chose Anthony McCoy, tight end from USC, with its sixth-round pick, No. 185 overall.

McCoy is 6 feet 4, 259 pounds.

McCoy is the first player from USC chosen by the Seahawks in this draft though Seattle did trade for LenDale White, a former Trojan.

McCoy caught 22 passes each of the past two seasons at USC. The Seahawks plan to frequently use two-tight end sets.

McCoy tested positive for marijuana at the scouting combine, according to a report from the Associated Press.

"Really, I just made a mistake, and I regret doing it," said McCoy during a conference call with Seattle-area reporters. "Right now, I've moved past that. I'm just focused on helping the Seattle Seahawks organization, help them win football games."

He said he was sure it hurt his standing in the draft.

"I know it did," McCoy said, "and like I said, it was a big mistake that I made. I've moved past it, and right now, all I'm focused on is playing football for the Seahawks."

General manager John Schneider said that McCoy was one of the more well-rounded tight ends available, and by the time the sixth round rolled around the Seahawks were willing to target him.

"We were comfortable at that spot," Schneider said. "But it had to be at that spot."

So what are the Seahawks getting?

"He's one of the more talented guys in the draft in terms of the full complement of blocking and receiving," Schneider said.

McCoy said that after he found out Seattle was going to pick him, coach Pete Carroll got on the phone.

"What's up big fella'," Carroll said.

McCoy's reaction was more emotional.

"My head's hurting, I'm over here shedding tears," said McCoy who was in Fresno, Ariz Calif. "I'm just real happy that if it's anywhere I've got to go, it's to be with coach Carroll again."
