Taylor Mays discusses his draft-day(s) drop

Posted by Danny O'Neil

The last time we heard from Taylor Mays, he intimated Pete Carroll had not been honest in the feedback he provided Mays in terms of what he needed to work on to prepare for the NFL. Specifically, Mays said that Carroll's instruction and guidance to Mays while at USC stood in stark contrast to Seattle's decision to choose Texas safety Earl Thomas with the 14th pick.

Well, a month has passed and Mays' feelings have dissipated to the point that he told Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports that there were no ill feelings toward Carroll.

That doesn't mean that his underlying feelings have changed, though.

Specifically, Mays said that Carroll urged him to return for his senior year, and gave him no indication at those holes pro teams might find in his game.

"He said, 'Tay, you come back for your senior year, you'll go higher than you would now.' I said, 'Coach, they're saying this about me and that about me, do I need to make changes to my game? What do I need to work on?'

He said, 'Don't worry, you'll be fine.' I was hoping he'd show me ... that he'd show me why these NFL coaches were killing me -- because I didn't play low, because I didn't do this or that, or whatever. But it didn't work out that way."

Mays said he has yet to talk to Carroll, but plans to call him, and he doesn't hold a grudge. Still, it's probably not going to be forgotten any time soon considering the teams will play twice a year, including the season-opener this year.
