Pete Carroll on Russell Okung: "he's prepared to start"
Posted by Joshua Mayers
Just hours before the team takes off for New Orleans, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll briefly addressed the media. The big news involved rookie tackle Russell Okung, who appears ready to go against the Saints after recovering from an ankle injury.
"Russell practiced very well today, went with the first group the whole time and he's prepared to start," Carroll said. "That's a real good sign for us. We like that. We'll see how he looks tomorrow after coming off this practice, but he's got a real good chance to be starting for us. That's a big deal for us."
Obviously that's good news for the Seahawks offense, which is facing an aggressive, attack-minded Saints defense. Here's the official injury report for the game:
OUT: DT Colin Cole (ankle), G Mike Gibson (ankle), TE Anthony McCoy (knee).
DOUBTFUL: RB Michael Robinson (hamstring), WR Brandon Stokley (calf), WR Golden Tate (ankle)
PROBABLE: QB Matt Hasselbeck (wrist), T Russell Okung (ankle), LB Lofa Tatupu (knee), S Earl Thomas (not injury related)
Thomas was excused from practice today due to a family matter but he's expected to be with the team Sunday. Robinson, McCoy, Gibson and Cole also didn't practice. Stokley and Tate were limited in drills today. Hasselbeck, Okung and Tatupu, who had missed a couple days with a knee issue, all practiced in full.
Caroll had a couple updates on other injured players that you can read on the jump page:
On Stokley: "We're going to go to gameday with him. He's made a quick recovery this week. We'll find out on Sunday as we've got a couple more days to see him recover. But he did very well. He's running around and looks like he has a real chance to play on Sunday."
On Robinson: "Mike still hasn't quite made it back. We're hoping next week will be his week. He's working at it. He's really frustrated by it, but it's just not quite there. He can run but he's not able to go full speed so we're going to hold him out another week."
On Hasselbeck: "He had a great week, he really did. He's just right. He's strong. Even when you go back to the week that he missed, that helped him physically. And you can see it. He was throwing the heck out of the football today. ... He seems to be just adding to his juice as we get to the end of the week. So that's a good job managing by the coaches. We'll see if that continues to help us."
On Gibson: "Yeah, he couldn't go. But he's making a really quick recovery. He's been through ankles before and he thinks he can get back for next week. He's not well enough to play."
