Confirmed: Jeremy Bates fired as Seahawks offensive coordinator
Posted by Danny O'Neil
Bates came to Seattle with Pete Carroll in January 2010 after serving as Carroll's offensive coordinator at USC in 2009. Bates previously worked under both Mike Shanahan in Denver and Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay.
Seattle's offense was a sore spot for most of this season, and finished with one of the lowest rushing averages in franchise history. In the Seahawks' playoff game, the offense punted eight times in eight possessions in the first half and they trailed by 28 points before getting the ball inside the Chicago 40.
Bates drew criticism for certain play calls, specifically on several deep throws made on third-and-short situations. However, a departure this sudden hints at a deeper philosophical divide.
This is an offense whose offensive-line coach abruptly retired one week before the regular season began, and started 10 different offensive-line configurations in 16 regular-season games.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh was cut coming out of training camp and Deion Branch was traded after four games.
There were promising signs, such as the Seahawks' postseason victory over New Orleans where Seattle scored 41 points, most ever for a playoff game in franchise history.
The move means Seattle will have its fourth offensive coordinator in four seasons going from Gil Haskell under Mike Holmgren in 2008, to Greg Knapp under Jim Mora in 2009 and then Bates this season.
Bates departure could trigger Seattle staff changes

"Also, Tom Cable, former head coach of the Raiders, is another top candidate available as offensive line coach, an area that needs upgrading in Seattle. Cable is a direct coaching descendant of Alex Gibbs, who retired as Seattle's line coach just before the season began."

Update at 11:53 a.m.: The Seahawks have been talking to Josh McDaniels -- former Broncos coach -- since Monday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.
