Kris Durham: Jumping at the opportunity

Posted by Danny O'Neil

John Schneider likes those athletic guys.

The first clue came when Seattle chose Jameson Konz of Kent State in the seventh-round of last year's draft. Here was a guy who played linebacker his first three years in college and moved to tight end. He is 6 feet 3, 234 pounds with a 46-inch vertical leap.

Konz was diagnosed with with a hip injury in training camp and spent 2010 on Seattle's injured reserve.

Receiver Kris Durham is cut from the same bolt of extremely athletic cloth, but he's not a player the Seahawks took a late-round flier on. He was a fourth-round pick, which shows the team has a higher level of expectation for him. He was not invited to the NFL scouting combine, and his selection caught many analysts off-guard.

"It had nothing to do with his height or his athleticism or his hands," Schneider said in a video posted on "It was basically all about the fact that he was able to jump over his mother in a parking lot ... And the interesting thing is his mom is actually 6 foot 2."

He kids, he kids. Well not about jumping over the mother. Schneider has photographic proof, but the Seahawks wanted another big receiver capable of filling the role Mike Williams played so capably last season.

Durham has been working out with Seahawks quarterback Charlie Whitehurst at times this offseason, a connection that was actually made before Seattle chose Durham.

"He's big and he's fast," Whitehurst said. "And I think that was probably why we were attracted to him. I know that there was a lot of attention around the league with him, and we were probably lucky that we got him where we did.

"I've been working out with him, I've thrown with him, trying to teach him as much about I think we'll be doing as possible. Trying to get a little bit of a rapport with him, and I think we're accomplishing that."

Interesting in hearing more about Durham? Danny Kelly of interviewed the Seahawks rookie receiver recently.
