Aaron Curry's promising start

Posted by Danny O'Neil

RENTON -- Aaron Curry was just a linebacker Sunday.

Wait. That's not quite right considering he played his most consistent, impactful game since the first five games of his rookie season two years.

Curry finished with five tackles -- most of any linebacker in Sunday's season-opener -- but even that doesn't give a full measure of the impact he had at the point of attack.

So he wasn't just a linebacker. He did, however, strictly play linebacker and for those looking for a sign of progress from the No. 4 overall pick from the 2009 draft, this was it. No more plays at defensive end. No more trying to make him a pass rusher. He's just a linebacker in the very best sense of the word.

"I'm kind of like, 'It's about time,' " Curry said. "Me going back to my natural outside linebacker as I've always done, as I did in school. All I did is play outside linebacker. I played SAM in our base and WILL in the nickel, and that's where I feel comfortable. It asks me to maintain the same footwork, the same pad level, and it allows me to keep the same key, the same reads, the same responsibilities. I'm enjoying it."

Curry starts at strongside linebacker, and he remains on the field in Seattle's nickel package along with Matt McCoy.

And while Curry qualified his characterization of Sunday's game with the disappointment of a loss, it was clear that this was a sign of progress from last season.

"I had a great time playing," Curry said of Sunday's game. "I enjoyed that to the fullest. I hate that we lost, but I was happy to be able to go out there and get my worship on. And I had a blast doing it."
