Seahawks LB Aaron Curry's roller-coaster role

Posted by Danny O'Neil

Anyone know exactly what Seattle's plan is for linebacker Aaron Curry?

If so, please clue me in. I'm at a loss.

Rookie K.J. Wright started at strongside linebacker, but Curry is the player who finished up there.

Curry played only one series at linebacker last week, but was on the field instead of Wright most of the second half. Curry had five tackles against Atlanta.

So has he reclaimed the first-unit role he appeared to lose? Were the Seahawks just trying to light a fire underneath him?

Coach Pete Carroll indicated after the game that the coaching staff wants to give both a chance.

"Trying to use them both and let them compete and show how they can add to it," Carroll said. "I don't know how those guys played particularly. They were solid, but nothing stood out."

Curry had a heck of a week on Seattle's scout defense during practice to the point that defensive coordinator Gus Bradley mentioned two interceptions Curry made during workouts on Thursday.

One of the questions with Curry has been his ability to stay true to his assignment and not chase plays. Two Seahawks linebackers suffered injuries against Atlanta as Malcolm Smith suffered a hamstring injury -- something that kept him out of the Week 2 game at Pittsburgh -- and Matt McCoy suffered what is believed to be a season-ending knee injury. That's a significant blow because not only was McCoy one of Seattle's mainstays on special teams, but he was a linebacker in the nickel defense as well.

"He has done a beautiful job of playing those snaps and giving those other guys a break," Carroll said. "Then they also have to double up on special teams. So we're going to have to take a look and see how serious the injury is, and what that means to us. He has done a beautiful job for us, just mixing in our rotations and stuff."

I thought KJ got worked on the TD to Gonzalez and would rather have seen Curry trying to cover him. I was at the game so didn't get to see...  Posted on October 3, 2011 at 8:54 AM by ralphy11. Jump to comment
