Russell Wilson to get start Friday in Kansas City?

Will Seahawks start Russell Wilson this week? Only Pete Carroll knows
By Danny O'Neil | The Seattle Times

There hasn't been any announcement regarding the Seahawks' starting quarterback for their third exhibition game.

Let's make that clear.

But it appears that rookie Russell Wilson is going to be the choice.

If that isn't exactly definitive consider it par for the course in a quarterback competition that has been anything but straightforward.

After Wilson passed for led three touchdown drives Saturday in Denver -- passing for two of those scores himself -- Carroll declined to say whether Wilson would get a chance to play with -- and against -- the starters. He again deferred on naming a starter Monday during his weekly radio appearance on ESPN 710 Seattle.

But after the players concluded meetings on Monday, there were multiple indications Wilson is going to start the third exhibition game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday.

Now, don't read anything into it beyond that. There was no announcement to that effect, and if Wilson is going to start this week, it may not carry on beyond that, but it certainly is significant. It would mean the Seahawks want to take a look at Wilson with their first-unit offense and against the opponent's starters before deciding on a starter.

This would undoubtedly inspire some hand wringing over taking practice time and first-unit repetitions away from Matt Flynn if he does in fact wind up the opening-day starter, but there's a couple of things to keep in mind in that regard:
1) Flynn played the entire first half of each of the first two exhibition games, which is more than a starter typically does.

2) Giving Wilson a chance with the first-unit offense this week might not be anything more than that: a chance. It would give the coaches a chance to make an apples-to-apples comparison about where Wilson is at in terms and see if he can replicate the performances he has had against the opponent's substitutes over the past two weeks.

If nothing else, it's going to put all the attention on Carroll Tuesday when he answers questions after practice.
