John Moffitt on Adderall: 'It was a total mistake'

Adderall and athletes
By Larry Stone | The Seattle Times

Adderall has been added to the jargon of today's NFL.

It's the drug cited by numerous players who have been suspended under the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. Offensive lineman John Moffitt was suspended for four games last year for it, and on Wednesday he talked about how that violation occurred.

"With me, it was just something that I didn't realize," Moffitt said. "It was a total mistake."

There was a reason for that. Moffitt was a rookie, drafted by Seattle while the lockout was under way. He didn't sign his contract in time to participate in the first day of training camp, which is when he said was when the policy was spelled out to the team, including the mention that Adderall was a banned substance.

"The day we had the info on it, I was held out," Moffitt said. "I was holding out my first day so I really didn't know. I don't think guys realize because it is a medication also. There's a lot of cases where guys already had prescriptions, but not through the league. It's just a really weird thing. It's not like steroids."

Players can be granted an exemption to use the drug, but must apply for that through the league. Moffitt was asked if he had a prescription for Adderall.

"An old one," he said. "I shouldn't have been taking it, but I honestly didn't realize. I really did look at it like a medication."

So how surprised was he when he learned that he was going to be suspended four games?

"I was shocked," Moffitt said. "Definitely. I just didn't see it coming at all, and I think that can be the case for a lot of guys. I think -- obviously now after this -- the awareness will be there."
