Elliott Bay Book Co. moving to Capitol Hill

Posted by Melissa Allison

Hurt by the recession and ongoing issues in Pioneer Square, Elliott Bay Book Co. is leaving for an old Ford repair center on Capitol Hill.

Construction already has begun at 1521 10th Ave., where the bookstore will open as early as March.

The move is a blow to Pioneer Square, where Elliott Bay has been an anchor attracting shoppers and tourists for 36 years.

"Moving the store is the second-last thing I would want to see happen. Seeing the store close would be the only thing worse," owner Peter Aaron said in a letter on Elliott Bay's web site. "The fact is that the business has been eking downward for the past several years, and the steeper decline of the past two years has made it clear that if the book store is to survive, it must be in a location that affords the vibrancy (especially in the evenings), parking, population base, and freedom from conflict with the sporting events -- all of which characterize the new site."

Keep reading the full story, which will be updated later tonight with interviews with Aaron, the new landlord and customers.
