Seattle U women’s basketball beats LMU, 72-70
LOS ANGELES — Sylvia Shephard’s two free throws with 48 seconds left put Seattle U ahead for good and the Redhawks were able to hang on for a 72-70 victory over Loyola Marymount on Thursday night.
Makenna Clark hit a pair of free throws and drove for a layup to give the Redhawks a 62-57 lead with 8:43 remaining but LMU went on an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 68-62 advantage.
Seattle U regained the lead, 69-68, on a pair of Ashley Ward free throws that followed an Alexis Montgomery three-pointer in a 7-0 Seattle U run.
Hazel Ramirez’s layup put Loyola Marymount (3-8) back in front with 1:40 left, setting up Shephard’s free throws.
“It was a crazy game and a game of runs, but when you can win a game [like that] on the road, it’s always a good one,” said head coach Joan Bonvicini. “We’re taking steps forward and just trying to get better. Defensively, we picked up the tempo in the second half, forced a lot of turnovers, and were able to capitalize on them.”
Montgomery led Seattle U with 14 points, while Ward scored 12 points and Ross had 10 for the Redhawks (5-6).
