It was awkward, but Seattle University senior Kacie Sowell shoved the cream pie in her coach’s face anyway.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pie Coach B (Joan Bonvicini) in the face,” Sowell said.

The timing wasn’t ideal, coming after Idaho knocked off Seattle U, 77-59. The loss ended SU’s six-game winning streak at Connolly Center.

It was the first time the teams squared off since Seattle U lost to its rival in the Western Athletic Conference tournament championship game last year, giving the Vandals the automatic NCAA tourney bid.

The only highlight for the Redhawks was Bonvicini fulfilling a promise to get pied if fans raised more than $2,000 toward women’s cancer research at the annual Play 4Kay game.

“It feels like the ultimate humiliation after this game,” Bonvicini said. “But it was for a good cause.”

The Vandals led 22-12 after a three-pointer by junior guard Stacey Barr before the Redhawks could piece together enough defensive stops for a 10-1 run to pull to 23-22. Idaho responded with a 12-5 run to close the half ahead 35-28.

The Redhawks pulled to 61-50 after a three-pointer by freshman Alexis Montgomery. But poor shooting prevented SU from closing within single digits.

The Redhawks (10-11, 5-3 WAC) shot 29.6 percent from the field in the game. Montgomery led SU with 12 points while Sowell had 11 points and 13 rebounds.

Barr led five Vandals players in double-digit scoring with 25 points and 12 rebounds.

Idaho (15-7, 8-0) remained undefeated in conference play, something the Vandals haven’t done for entire season since 1981-82.

“We have one more game at their place, so we’re just going to come back as strong as we can,” Montgomery said.
