OREM, Utah — Despite just a 3-6 league record coming in, the Seattle University men’s basketball team went into the den of the Western Athletic Conference leaders and promptly put on a winning display of defense, rebounding and outside shooting.

The Redhawks dominated Utah Valley 71-57 Thursday to improve to 4-6 in the WAC and 12-11 overall. The Wolverines (14-9 overall) still lead the WAC at 8-2.

Isiah Umipig led the Redhawks with 32 points, with 27 coming in the second half. He went an impressive 7 for 11 from three-point range and also added seven rebounds. He was the only Redhawk in double figures. Shore Adenekan added nine rebounds and eight points for the winners.

Seattle U had a 42-25 edge on the boards and limited Utah Valley to 35.8 percent shooting from the field (19 of 53).

“It was a tough and gritty defensive effort against one of the toughest teams in the conference,” said Seattle U coach Cameron Dollar.

At Seattle U women 69, Utah Valley 65

Sylvia Shephard led four Redhawks (12-12, 7-4 WAC) in double figures with 20 points in beating the Wolverines (4-19, 1-9).

Makenna Clark added 14 points for Seattle U, while Ashley Ward had 12 and Wilma Afunugo 10.

Kacie Sowell had nine rebounds and two blocks for SU.
