Garfield High School has hired Craig Jackson to coach girls basketball.
Jackson, a longtime assistant on the boys basketball staff at Franklin High School, replaces Joyce Walker, who is battling lung cancer. Walker announced in May that she was taking a leave of absence.
Garfield athletic director Peggy Jackson-Williams said Garfield had 20 applicants for the job and interviewed eight.
Jackson has been on the Franklin staff of coach Jason Kerr for eight years, and the run has included two state championships.
Lowe head coach
Nina Lowe, a Shorecrest girls basketball assistant the past three seasons, has been hired as head coach at Shorewood, her alma mater.
Lowe, 25, is a 2000 graduate of Shorewood and played on the 1998 3A state-championship team.
Lowe replaces Jeff Bernhardt, who resigned in May to become head coach at Hazen, his alma mater. This is Lowe's first head-coaching job.
Run under the lights
A twilight cross-country meet? That is the goal of Randy Edens, cross-country coach at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.
He is planning to have a Sept. 22 meet "under the lights" at Cedarcrest Golf Course in Marysville. He plans to have light towers on the 5-kilometer course.
The proposed format includes two varsity events for each gender. The first will be for teams expected to finish in the top half of their leagues and the other for top-10 state level teams. There also will be junior-varsity races. There is an entry fee of $100 per team ($150 total for schools with boys and girls entries) to cover lighting costs.
