Huskies volleyball team eyes Pac-12 title
The Huskies need one win to earn a share of their first Pac-12 title since 2005.
The Washington Huskies volleyball team returns to its home floor with two final matches Wednesday and Friday, and the opportunity to claim a Pac-12 Conference championship.
Washington (24-2, 16-2 in Pac-12) hosts Oregon State on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and then takes on the rival Washington State Cougars Friday night a few hours after the Apple Cup dust settles in Husky Stadium.
The Huskies need one win to earn a share of their first Pac-12 title since 2005, and two wins to win the title outright. Stanford sits one game behind Washington in the conference race at 15-3.
The NCAA tournament bracket will be announced Sunday. Washington could be selected to host the first and second rounds, likely to take place Dec. 6-7.
• Seattle University’s volleyball team saw its season end Tuesday with a 3-1 loss to Bakersfield in a WAC semifinal match in Phoenix. Seattle U (13-20) took the early lead but fell 26-28, 25-15, 25-15, 25-19.
• Washington guard Jazmine Davis was named to the 50-player watch list for the 2013-14 Naismith Trophy. Davis joins five other players from the Pac-12 who are being considered for the award, given to the top player in women’s college basketball.
• Middle blocker Kayla Erickson of Western Washington University is the 2013 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Year. Viking libero Samantha Hutchinson was voted the GNAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row.
• The Gonzaga women’s basketball team (3-1) moved up one spot in the USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll, checking in at No. 24. AP also ranks them at No. 24.
