Is Seattle a cat town or a dog town?

Dog vs.cats — it's an eternal debate. Where do we stand on the matter here in the Seattle area? To find out, we took a look at data from the market research company
Scarborough Research. The answer, as it turns out, is...well, it really depends how you look at it.

More of us have a dog than a cat, though not by much. Nearly 39% of households in the Seattle/Tacoma area have a dog, compared to just over 35% having a cat. So the dogs win that one. But if you look at how we rank in dog and cat ownership compared to other areas of the country, it turns out that cats have the edge.

Scarborough ranks the Seattle/Tacoma region at 5th among the 77 market areas in the United States in the percentage of households with a cat. We are way above the national average — 41% above, to be exact — in cat ownership. And it must be a Northwest thing, because Spokane and Portland are ahead of us in the rankings at numbers 1 and 3, respectively.

And dogs? Not so much. We rank 57th nationally, with just 38.6% dog households. That's a little lower than the national average, and way below the number 1 ranked Albuquerque/Santa Fe area, where a whooping 59% of households have a dog.

So how about you? Are you a dog person or a cat person? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments...

You don't have to go out in the cold, windy, rainy weather to take care of your cat's bathroom needs.  Posted on December 6, 2011 at 4:40 AM by willds. Jump to comment
Reminds me of the type of leading question asked in a school newspaper. Like, 'What is your favorite colored sock?"  Posted on December 6, 2011 at 4:15 AM by glg7. Jump to comment
What a cerebral question to ask. Dog gone if I know.  Posted on December 6, 2011 at 4:12 AM by glg7. Jump to comment
