New dog park opens and more free fun

Free! Free events and a chance for dogs to run free at the opening of a new off-leash park help roundout the pet events for October.

Mukilteo's Tails and Trails Dog Park Grand Opening: 10-11 a.m. Oct. 27, 1301 Mukilteo Blvd., Mukilteo. The ¾-acre site is said to be the first off-leash dog park in the city. It's part of the Japanese Gulch area. Opening celebration activities include a dog Halloween costume contest.

Wag Fest at Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden: 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. Oct. 27, 2525 South 336th St., Federal Way (on the Weyerhaeuser Corporate Headquarters Campus). It's the one day that dogs can enter the garden. Dogs must be on leash. View the plant displays, watch the F.I.D.O. Drill Team and join the 1K Dog Walk. This event is part of the Fall Foliage Festival and Plant Sale. (Dogs will not be admitted to the Rutherford Conservatory or speaker tent.) Free admission.

Pug-o-Ween: 1-3 p.m. Oct, 27, Bitter Lake Community Center, 13035 Linden Ave N, Seattle. Pugs in costume. Enough said.

Howl-at-the-Moon Muttmixer: 6-8 p.m. Oct. 30, Woodmark Hotel, 1200 Carillon Point, Kirkland. Free event includes costume contest and swag bags. RSVP to with the number of people and dogs planning to attend. and

Candy Corn Cat Adoption Special: Through Oct. 31. Purrfect Pals is reducing the adoption fee for all cats that are colored like candy corn. See the adoption centers listed on the website for details.

Fee Free Felines: Through Oct. 31. Regional Animal Services of King County, Pet Adoption Center 21615 64th Ave. S., Kent. The $55 adoption fee for cats six months and older is being waived this month.

Pet Supply Drive: Through Oct. 31. Clancy's Pad is having a pet food and supplies drive to help the Humane Society of Central Washington. Donations are being accepted at Mud Bay locations in Lake Forest Park, Ballard, Canyon Park and University Village. For a list of needed items, see the website.
