‘Six by Sondheim’
An intimate and moving look at the life and art of the great composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Directed by frequent collaborator James Lapine, this documentary focuses on the creation of six of Sondheim’s songs. It features archival footage (Ethel Merman in “Gypsy”!) and interviews; restagings (featuring Audra McDonald and Jarvis Cocker); and personal anecdotes. If you are a fan at all, this is essential viewing (and no, I did not tear up during the “Sunday” segment). 9 p.m. Monday on HBO (seattletimes.com/tvlistings).
