Man arrested in assault on sleeping transient

Seattle police arrested a 22-year-old man on Tuesday night after he allegedly assaulted a transient at Third Avenue and Pine Street.

At about 10:47 p.m., police responded to a report of a a transient male being assaulted outside a business. When officers arrived they saw a man standing over a another man, who was on the ground, according to a police account.

The officer ordered the man to stop, but he refused and ran off. The suspect ran across the street, but the officer caught up with him a short time later, police said.

The victim, 53, told police he was sleeping underneath a blanket and did not see the attacker. However, several witnesses identified the suspect as the man who had punched and kicked the sleeping man.

The victim declined medical attention, according to police.

The suspect was arrested for investigation of assault and obstructing a police officer and booked into the King County Jail.
