Daily News: Port Townsend house fire blamed on cat

Posted by John de Leon

A pet cat named Osiris is being blamed for a house fire that has left a Port Townsend family homeless, the Peninsula Daily News is reporting.

Early Sunday morning, Lois Lund went to investigate a loud popping noise in her house and discovered her kitchen was on fire. Lund put out the flames with a garden hose and called firefighters, the Daily News reports.

East Jefferson Fire-Rescue investigator Kurt Steinbach determined the fire started in a toaster oven that had been left on, and the culprit was Osiris.

Lund said Osiris has been acting strangely since a dog moved into the house. The cat had recently taken to sleeping on top of the toaster oven, she said.

Lund's daughter, Sena Lund, said Osiris was likely on top of the toaster oven "and probably did some step aerobics" that turned the appliance on.

The fire department estimates damage to the house at $5,000. Lois Lund says that repairs will cost at least $20,000 and take three months.

In the meantime, Osiris is spending more time outdoors these days.
