Pacific cop in hot water over 'inappropriate' cell phone photo

Posted by John de Leon

-- From Times staff reporter Sara Jean Green:

A Pacific police officer has been on administrative leave since Nov. 3 after he was accused of sending an "inappropriate" message and photograph to a citizen with his city-issued cell phone, according to the department's chief.

Pacific Police Chief John Calkins said a hearing, in which command staff will review the investigation into alleged misconduct and the chief will make a discipline decision, was scheduled for Monday. But at the request of the officer's union representatives, Calkins agreed to postpone the hearing until Nov. 30.

The officer sent the photo and message "in error" to a citizen, who was not the intended recipient, said Calkins. He said the fact it was sent in mistake "doesn't make a difference to me." He said the officer, who is in his mid-30s, has been with the Pacific Police Department for approximately seven years.

Calkins said the message and photo were not graphic and did not include any nudity, but taken together were "somewhat sexual in nature."
