Mukilteo woman charged with starving, beating 10-year-old

-- From Times staff reporter Christine Clarridge:

A Mukilteo woman accused of starving and beating her boyfriend's 10-year-old sister was charged Monday with first-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment of a child.

Mary Mazalic, 34, is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail in Snohomish County Jail.

According to police, the victim and her adult brother live with Mazalic. The girl was taken into protective custody earlier this summer and spent several weeks at an Everett hospital recovering from her injuries, according to court documents.

Physicians told police that the girl had "severe malnutrition" and a kidney infection, and that she was covered with bruises, abrasions, scars and ulcers, and had cigarette burns on her feet and wrist, and "whip cord" marks all over her abdomen and chest. The girl also weighed 51 pounds, compared with a normal weight for her age of 88 pounds, police said.

Additional allegations in the case were revealed in charging documents filed on Monday.

Prosecutors say the girl was sent to live with her 34-year-old brother and his girlfriend, Mazalic, about a year ago. The girl's adoptive parents, who live in New York, paid the couple to take care of her, prosecutors say, but she was only fed a full meal when company was over.

The girl told police Mazalic put soap in her food, took photos of her with a soiled diaper on her head and intentionally created scars so that "other kids would know how bad she was," prosecutors say.
