13Th Coast Guard District, Seattle: In a time of heightened homeland defense, the 13th Coast Guard District, based at Pier 36, patrols and protects more than 460,000 square miles of the Pacific Ocean with 14 search and rescue units, three air stations and 10 cutters. Has stations in Bellingham and Port Angelos as well as numerous small-boat stations on the Washington and Oregon coast.
Washington National Guard: Headquartered at Camp Murray in Pierce County, the Army and Air National Guard have 7,800 members across the state.
Reserves: Army, 3,500; Navy, 6000; Marines, 720; Air Force, 3,500.
Note: Totals provided by individual branches. The Department of Defense lists approximately 20,000 total reserves in Washington.
