As New Yorkers, and then the world, watched, the World Trade Center billowed smoke and flames before first the south tower, then the north tower collapsed into rubble. Smoke and fire also continued to erupt from the damaged Pentagon building into Tuesday night.
Officials believe fatalities from the attacks to be in the thousands.
