This first leg of the trip takes Ross Anderson about 900 miles up the coast. Compared to the original Klondikers, Anderson is traveling in style aboard the Alaska ferry: poorer gold seekers of 1897 gathered supplies, loaded their outfits onto crowded steamers or sailing ships and spent a couple of weeks beating into North Pacific storms to Skagway or other then-crude Alaskan ports.

This map may take a long time to download, as there is a lot of detail, but have patience: it can't take nearly as long as it took those early settlers to actually get there. And, you won't have to exert the effort Ross Anderson does as he hikes Chilkoot Pass.
