Larry Stone's thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs up

Kris Medlen, Braves: Medlen's shutout against San Diego on Thursday was his 16th straight start won by the Braves, breaking John Smoltz's team record of 15. Medlen extended his scoreless streak to 20-1/3 innings.

Thumbs down

Randy Wolf: Wolf was released by the Brewers on Wednesday — his 36th birthday. Wolf was 3-10 with a 5.69 ERA overall, and 0-4, 6.57 in his last five starts.

Ex-Mariner of the week

Adrian Beltre, Rangers: His three-homer game on Wednesday gave him 22 for the season, his 10th season with 20 or more homers. The only third basemen with more are Eddie Mathews (14), Mike Schmidt (13), Chipper Jones (12), Ron Santo (11) and Graig Nettles (11).

"If you're a .210 hitter, you can shoot up all the steroids you want and you're still a .210 hitter." — Rangers manager Ron Washington on the effects of substances such as testosterone.
