Now what? Seattle’s fate is up in the air
Is this the NBA’s final decision?
No, but the league’s Board of Governors is expected to vote the week of May 13 to formalize its refusal to let the Kings move to Seattle.
Is expansion still a possibility?
NBA Commissioner David Stern has said that while expansion is “not a complete non-starter” in the long term, it is not being considered now, and there is no thought it is a serious immediate option.
Are there other teams available?
Not really. The Milwaukee Bucks have a 25-year-old arena and no firm plan for a new one, but their owner is a Milwaukee native who has said he does not intend to sell the team or see it relocate.
So what does Seattle do?
Keep moving along. The environmental review for the Sodo arena is due this year, and the deal the city and county has with Chris Hansen doesn’t expire until December 2017, so there’s time to see how things shake out.
What about hockey fans?
Tough luck, for now. Hansen has said all along that the NBA would need to be secured before a potential NHL owner could be pursued. The arena deal won’t pencil out the other way around.
