Seattle University has hired Suzy Barcomb as the new coach of the Redhawk women’s basketball program.

With a longstanding history in the Pacific Northwest, Barcomb brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to Seattle U.

“Suzy has been a highly successful head women’s basketball coach for the last 18 years, turning two NCAA intercollegiate programs into consistent winners,” said Seattle U AD Bill Hogan. “As a former player at the University of Washington and a head women’s basketball coach at the University of Puget Sound, Suzy has strong connections with high school coaches in the Pacific Northwest. We know Suzy will develop Seattle U women’s basketball into a championship caliber team over the next few years.”

Barcomb takes over for Joan Bonvicini, who resigned last month after coaching the Redhawks since 2009.

Barcomb just completed her sixth season at Cal State East Bay, where she led the Pioneers to the university’s first conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance in any sport. She surpassed career win No. 300 in February 2015.

Barcomb coached at Puget Sound for 12 seasons where she became the all-time winningest coach in program history at 237-87.

Women’s Golf

• Washington senior Ying Luo led the 13th-ranked Huskies on day one of the Pac-12 women’s golf championships at Ruby Hills Golf Course in Pleasanton, Calif., as she currently sits third overall at 4-under 68. The Huskies are ninth after the first round at 1-over 289. Wenyung Keh is tied for 22nd at 72.

Washington State is tied for seventh with No. 12 Stanford.

WSU (1-under 287) trails tournament-leader, No. 2 USC (10-under 278) by nine strokes heading into the second round. Junior Cherokee Kim and sophomore Alivia Brown are tied for fifth with nine other golfers after shooting 2-under 70 in the first round.

Arizona’s Haley Moore leads the field at 6-under 66.

• Eastern Washington is tied for eighth with Montana at 307 after the first round of the Big Sky Conference championship at Boulder Creek (Nev.) Golf Club.

• Western Washington is in second place after the first round of the GNAC championships at Coeur d’Alene (Idaho) Resort Golf Course.

The Vikings are at 28-over 312.

Western was led by senior Kristen Hansen with a 6-over 77.

• Gonzaga had a solid start at the West Coast Conference championships at Blackhawk Country Club in Danville, Calif. Gonzaga is fourth at 8-over 296.

Dania Uy tops the Gonzaga lineup after shooting 1-over 73.

Baseball

• Washington earned its first ranking of the season, checking in at 27th in the Collegiate Baseball poll. The Huskies improved to 19-12 and into a tie for second with California in the Pac-12 standings at 9-6.

• Trek Stemp is the first Cougar to earn Pac-12 player of the week honors since Derek Jones in April 2012. He helped Washington State to a series win over ninth-ranked Oregon State. It marked WSU’s first series win against OSU since 2010.
