Tony Kidd missed Labor Day this year. But he put the flag up Wednesday evening at the suggestion of his wife, Tracie, who got the idea from watching the news.

"Just out of respect for the people in New York," explained Kidd, 40. "I'm going to keep it up until everything gets back to normal, basically."

The elder of his two boys — Christopher, 9, and Tyler, 5 — has been asking why the attacks happened. Kidd tells him he'll understand when he's a little older.

"I missed Pearl Harbor. This is the only real tragedy I grew up with," Kidd said. "I'm just proud to be an American."
